As many experts will tell you, home food storage is essential for surviving an emergency situation. Canned goods and staple food items such as wheat and flour can turn a tragic situation into something much more bearable. Unfortunately, in today’s modern world, few people maintain emergency food supplies because it’s so easy to just walk to the local grocer.

Home food storage is often broken down into three basic categories; survival, emergency and long term storage. A survival food store should include everything you and your family might need to survive for at least 72 hours without any outside assistance. Ideally, this type of storage will be able to support your family for up to a month if needed, but experts recommend 72 hours as the absolute minimum. Canned, dehydrated and freeze dried foods are recommended for this type of storage.

Emergency storage is generally referring to stores of food that will allow you and your family to survive for a minimum of a month, and maybe several. When most people say “emergency food storage” this is the category to which they are referring. Just like survival food storage, these food stores are usually made up of canned, dehydrated and/or survival food kits freeze dried food; however, other items are also suggested. Toiletries such as soap, shampoo and of course first aid items are all highly recommended. Emergency food stores are most often built up over time, so it’s not necessary to run out and buy everything at once.

Long term storage requires the most storage space. This type of storage is meant to be able to support a family for upwards of a year or more. Long term food storage is hard to maintain if you live in an apartment or condo, which is why this type of food storage is most often associated with homeowners. Canned goods and dehydrated foods are common, as are staple items such as grain and flour. Everything should be carefully stored in containers designed to keep out pests as well as moisture, both of which can quickly destroy your supplies.
